Guards/Bite Appliances

Protect your teeth from sports injuries, grinding or jaw clenching

Don’t forget to protect your teeth. The best protection from mouth injuries is a professionally made mouth guard. They fit better and last longer. So, when you’re shopping for new equipment, don’t forget to protect your smile!

Grinding/clenching

Wearing a guard can mean the difference between a healthy smile and damaged teeth. There are two common ways in which we harm our teeth: playing sports, and grinding and clenching while we sleep.

At Markham Gate Dental Centre, we will assess and fit you for custom guards and bite appliances that help to protect your teeth from both types of damage.

Grinding/clenching:

When you clench or grind your teeth while your sleep, dentists refer to this as "bruxism." It can result in chipped teeth, damaged fillings, painful headaches, and can even loosen your teeth. We can fit you with a special night guard that will protect your teeth from breaking down while you sleep.

Sports:

Sports often leave your teeth open to potential injury -- particularly in contact sports such as hockey and football. Let us fit you with a sports guard to protect their teeth during physical activity.

Call or visit Markham Gate Dental Centre today to discuss a custom guard or bite appliance to protect your teeth from harm.

FAQs -- Click to reveal the answers to questions about guards and bite appliances

Q: Will I be able to talk while wearing a sports guard?

A: Yes, you will. It takes a little getting used to, but soon it will be a comfortable part of your mouth, and the protection these devices provide is well worth it.

Q: How do I know if I am grinding my teeth at night?

A: If you are experiencing jaw pain or headaches, it could be caused by grinding and clenching in your sleep. If you're unsure, ask your dentist for advice. We'll evaluate your teeth to see if a bite appliance would be a good idea.

Q: I often hear my child grinding their teeth at night. Should they be fitted for a bite appliance?

A: Ask your dentist about your child's night grinding or clenching, as there may be other ways we can help them. Bite appliances are not usually suggested for children with primary or mixed dentitions, as they can restrict the growth of their jaw and the normal exfoliation of their teeth.

Q: Does my dental insurance cover a custom guard or bite appliance?

A: As with any dental treatment, it depends on your coverage, but most dental plans cover at least a portion of a guard or bit appliances. We would be happy to help you understand your available coverage, so please ask us at your next appointment.
