Markham Cosmetic Dentistry

Take your smile from dull to dazzling.

Hold a mirror to your face and smile. What do you notice? When considering cosmetic dentistry, it is important to look at three things: bite, gums, and teeth. Cosmetic dentistry can improve and maintain your bite. Think about your gums. Are they healthy, well-coloured, and do they adequately frame your teeth? Also, look at your teeth. Do you have fillings? Are your teeth discoloured from coffee or smoking? Are your teeth poorly shaped with chips and cracks?

Porcelain veneers have become widely accepted as the benchmark of conservative cosmetic dentistry. They have been used successfully to mask teeth which are discoloured and poorly shaped. Bonding ultra-thin shells of porcelain to teeth created many of those Hollywood smiles that we envy.

Today, with the advancement in adhesive technology, we can achieve truly tenacious bond strengths of porcelain to tooth structure. As a result of this technology we are capable of doing more with bonded porcelain than ever before. One such application is the correction of mild to moderate crowding of the anterior teeth or what we call “Instant Orthodontics.” We call this instant orthodontics because in as little as two weeks a patient can go from teeth that are crowded to a perfect smile. Patients that decide to do instant orthodontics usually have already explored the possibility of conventional orthodontics and did not want to spend two to three years in braces to align their teeth only to find that to correct the shape and color they would have to do porcelain veneers.

We also use numerous methods to conservatively restore your teeth and help you obtain optimal oral health, including tooth colour fillings, crowns, fixed bridges, dental implants and full mouth restoration.

CEREC refers to porcelain restorations (caps & fillings) that are designed on a computer and fabricated in one dental visit. Without the CEREC technology this procedure will involve various impressions and temporary filling materials and takes two to three visits to the dental office.

What can CEREC do? CEREC can be used to:

• Replace your aged fillings

• Replace broken or cracked tooth structure

• Create crowns (caps)

• Enhance your smile (veneers)

Self-confidence and inner composure -- two things that we would all like to have. But many people suffer with a blemished appearance, often due to their teeth. CEREC restorations will brighten up your life and your self-confidence will be restored. We are able to use ceramic materials that match your natural tooth in colour and appearance, so that your repaired teeth appear as originals.

CEREC restorations are almost as strong as dental enamel – the hardest of all materials in the human body. This strength comes from the ceramic material as well as the bonding of the restoration to the tooth. Furthermore, CEREC conserves as much of the original tooth as possible. This means we can frequently avoid the need for a full coverage crown (cap).

We are happy to offer Cosmetic Dentistry services to help restore your confidence in your smile. At Markham Gate Dental Centre, we use ZOOM technology to remove stains from your teeth, use veneers to correct a tooth’s colour, close a space, or repair a cracked tooth.

Veneers

Porcelain veneers close spaces, increase length, create maximum whiteness and straighten teeth, so they are preferred by many of our patients. They are also very durable. Deep tetracycline stains can be removed from a smile with this procedure. Veneers can sometimes allow patients to bypass orthodontic treatment. In as short as two visits, you can have a smile that beams confidence.

Crowns

A crown, often called a cap, is an artificial covering for the visible part of your tooth. Crowns are generally made of porcelain avoiding the need for metal alloys. You may need a crown if you have had root canal treatment, have large fillings in a tooth, a broken tooth, or severely stained, misshapen, or misaligned teeth. A crown covers part or all of the visible portion of your tooth and protects it from further damage. They are strong, long-lasting and absolutely stunning in their recreation of natural teeth. And the colour is so natural, you’ll have a very difficult time telling these from your original teeth.

Teeth Whitening

Whether you want your teeth whiter right now or over a few nights while you sleep, ZOOM! is your answer. The Zoom! In-Office Whitening System uses proprietary technology to whiten your teeth an average of three shades in a little over an hour while you relax at your dentist`s office. It’s ideal for anyone who wants immediate results.

Contouring

During this procedure, your teeth are carefully reduced and built up with laminate material until they are the ideal shape and size as part of the contouring treatment. This is used to reshape teeth by correcting crooked, chipped or overlapping teeth.

Bonding

In bonding treatments, a resin material is applied to the teeth and hardened using a special light. This is used to improve the appearance of teeth, or to close gaps between them.

FAQs -- Click to reveal the answers to cosmetic dentistry questions

Q: Are crowns and veneers the same thing?

A: Crowns and veneers are two different treatments. A crown is an artificial tooth that caps (covers) your natural tooth. Crowns are commonly used to improve the look and strength of a tooth that has a significant amount of decay, or already contains several fillings. Used to correct a tooth's colour, close a space or repair a crack, a veneer is a thin laminate that is bonded directly to your teeth.

Q: My teeth are stained -- is it because I drink coffee and red wine?

A: Yes, drinks such as red wine, coffee and tea can cause stains on your teeth. Diet soda is a lesser-known problem, because its acidity breaks down your tooth's enamel, leaving it prone to stains. Rather than cutting these drinks out entirely, just moderate your intake and be sure to brush your teeth after consumption.

Q: Celebrities and people on reality TV shows are always getting brand-new smiles, and it takes no time at all. What procedure are they getting?

A: Veneers are a speedy solution. Often used on makeover shows to brighten smiles, veneers may be appropriate for you, too. Talk to a dentist at Markham Gate Dental Centre today about your options.

Q: Does my dental insurance cover cosmetic dentistry procedures?

A: Your coverage will depend on your insurance plan. Our friendly front desk staff would be happy to help you understand your available coverage, so please ask us at your next appointment.
